That Was Sweet
Tuesday night the Falcons returned home and continued the winning momentum with a lopsided 11-1 victory over the visiting Walla Walla Sweets, extending the win streak to four games.
The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the bats came alive. After the Falcons had loaded the bases with two out, Jacob Embleton smashed a timely single to drive home Finley Buckner and Cade Burnham.
In the very next inning the home side put the game out of reach with five runs on only two hits, taking advantage of the Sweets’ pitcher’s lack of control. With the bases loaded, Owen Rodgers scored on a wild pitch before another bases loaded walk to Embleton forced Buckner home. The next batter, Druw Frost also drew a walk, scoring Burnham. Ashton Graff-Rowe brought in Matthew Pena with a fielder’s choice followed by an RBI single by Rodgers scoring Embleton with the Falcons batting around the order.
Another two-out rally in the seventh inning resulted in another Falcons run. After a Talon Tucker single, he moved to second base on a Pena walk before the runners advanced on another wild pitch. Embleton then tallied his fourth RBI of the ball game with a single to drive in Tucker.
The offence was clicking and scored three more times in the eighth inning, once again taking advantage of the Sweets’ struggles on the bump. With bases loaded again, Ty Peters walked to score Rodgers who reached on an error earlier in the inning. Two batters later Pena and Kaden Prosofsky recorded back-to-back RBI singles to give the Falcons a 10-run lead.
Over the course of the game the offence recorded 12 hits, led by Embleton and his two hits and four runs driven in. A total of nine different Falcons hitters collected at least one hit in the victory.
Meanwhile on the mound, five Falcons pitchers combined to toss 10 strikeouts and scatter six hits. Starter Max Biddle was brilliant through 4.1 shutout innings, fanning four while Aiden Ennis recorded the win, striking out two.
The Falcons and Sweets meet again on Wednesday night at Elks Stadium at 6:35pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance or an hour before opening pitch at the gate.
