Hot Streak Continues

Tuesday night the Falcons extended their winning streak to six games with a convincing 7-1 victory over the visiting Kamloops NorthPaws at Elks Stadium.

Starting pitching Seth Sumner was brilliant, recording his third win of the season, throwing five complete innings of shutout baseball and struck out eight in the process.  Four relievers came out of the bullpen and pitched very well holding the visitors to five hits.

The offence continued to hit the ball hard, putting up another seven runs on the strength of nine hits.  Eight different hitters recorded a knock as Ty Peters finished with a pair and Nolan Eberwein blasted a homerun to lead off the first inning.

With a run already on the board in their first at bats, the Falcons added a second with runners at the corners after back-to-back singles following the Eberwein’s homer.  Justin Tucker executed perfectly and lifted a sacrifice fly to score Xander Sielken with what would turn out to be the game winning run.

In the bottom of the fourth the offence added some insurance in the form of three runs on three hits.   Talon Tucker started the inning with a single, then moved to second when Justin Tucker reached on an error.  With Talon in scoring position, Druw Frost came up with a timely RBI single while Justin advanced to third base.  Cade Burnham was next and he scored Justin courtesy of a sacrifice fly, the Falcons’ second of the ballgame.   Frost then took advantage of some sloppy mound work moving to second on a balk, then third after a wild pitch.  He then scored thanks to a Peters RBI single.

With the pitchers in command on the bump, the offence was able to play aggressively especially on the bases scoring two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Peters drew a one-out walk, then advanced to second on a Boogie McNeal single.  On the next pitch, the Falcons performed a successful double steal as the Peters moved to third and McNeal up to second.  Peters then scored on an error charged to the catcher and McNeal moved to third base.  After Eberwein walked the Falcons again executed a double steal attempt.  This time Eberwein was thrown out at second but drew a throw which allowed McNeal to come home and score.

After the win on Tuesday, the Falcons leapfrogged the Nanaimo NightOwls in the standings to third place, 3.5 games back of top spot in the North Division.

On Wednesday the scene will shift to Kamloops when the Falcons (11-7) visit the NorthPaws (7-12) at 6:35pm with the Falcons trying to extend the win streak to lucky seven.  The teams will play again at Elks Stadium on Thursday night at 6:35pm.
