Comeback Kids

Saturday night the visiting Falcons scored four runs in their final three at bats to comeback to beat the Elks in Bend 7-6.

Like they did on Friday night, the Falcons opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Matthew Pena to score Nolan Eberwein who had walked to lead off the game.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Elks took their first lead of the series scoring a pair of runs off starter Lucas Smith who lasted just two innings.

Batting in the top of the third, the Falcons took the lead right back with two runs of their own. Boogie McNeal walked then moved to second as Eberwein reached on an error. Rees Kozar also walked to load the bases in front of Pena. He hit a sharply hit ball to the first baseman whose only option was touch first base to force home McNeal for Pena’s second RBI of the game. Eberwein also found a way to score the go ahead run on the play.

The Elks tied the ball game in the fourth with a single run then took the lead back in the fifth with another run before adding two more in the home half of the sixth. With the lead 6-3, the Falcons started to chip away.

In the seventh they cut the lead. They would load the bases with no-one out after a Finley Buckner single and a pair of walks ahead of Eberwein. With a three-run lead the Elks kept the infield at regular depth and induced a double play off the bat of Eberwein but it did score Buckner.

Then in the eighth the visitors would tie it. CJ Griggs smacked one-out double, then moved to third on a ground out. Cade Burnham recorded a timely hit to score Griggs. Buckner then walked putting the tying run into scoring position with two-out. After a pitching change Buckner advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on an error charged to the catcher to tie the game.

The Falcons offence continued to manufacture runs and got the game winning score in the top of the ninth. McNeal walked then scored on an Eberwein double down the line to put visitors in front.

In the bottom of the inning the coaches turned to Eddie Dolansky to save the game, and he did just that getting the Elks in order to preserve the team’s ninth win of the campaign. Jacob Beaudoin recorded the win after two shutout innings out of the bullpen.

Offensively the club tallied eight hits with Griggs, Burnham and Buckner recording two each. Pena tallied a pair of RBIs and Eberwein came across the plate twice. The team did a great job of taking advantage of nine walks in the contest.

Sunday afternoon at 5:05pm the Falcons (9-8) will try and earn the series sweep in Bend before coming home to host the Kamloops NorthPaws on Tuesday night at Elks Stadium.
