Shootout Win
Sunday night in Yakima the Falcons won the series with a convincing 14-10 win over the Pippins for their 14th win of the campaign.
The offence went to work early and often scoring at least a run in the first six innings and starting pitcher Seth Sumner threw six dominating innings and recorded his fourth victory of the season.
In the top of the first inning the Falcons put up the first of their 14 runs in the game. After Jacob Loving reached first base courtesy of an error he advanced to second on the same mishap. Then with two-out in the inning Jacob Embleton recorded a timely hit to drive in Loving.
The Falcons took advantage of another Pippins error in the second inning to score another run. After loading the bases with two-out, the Pippins’ pitcher committed an error allowing Finley Buckner, who singled to begin the inning, to score from third.
In the third inning the offence continued to push across runs. Justin Tucker and Ashton Graff-Rowe led off the inning with a single and walk respectively. On the very next pitch they executed a double steal to perfection, getting themselves into scoring position. Two batters later Owen Rodgers doubled to bring both runners into score giving the visitors a four-run lead.
They scored another pair of runs in the fourth. Embleton and Tucker got on base with a free pass. Graff-Rowe then singled to score Embleton and moved Tucker to third. A couple of pitches later Buckner hit into a fielder’s choice to score Tucker.
Meanwhile Sumner continued to mow down Pippins’ hitters, striking out four and scattering five hits over the course of his six innings.
In the fifth inning, the Falcons batted around the order and scored five runs to put the game out of reach. The inning saw RBI singles from Embleton and Tucker while Josh Cunnigan got into the act with a sacrifice fly, Buckner forced home Embleton on a bases loaded walk before Tucker scored on a wild pitch.
After all that scoring, the Pippins finally got on the board in the bottom of the inning with a single run.
Loving got that run back leading off the sixth inning with a single to left field, then moved to second on a ground out. Two batters later, Embleton doubled to score Loving with the team’s 12th run.
The Falcons added two more tallies in the top of the ninth, thanks to an RBI single from Buckner and then another wild pitch to score Graff-Rowe.
Once Sumner left the game with the lead well in hand, the Pippins started to come alive offensively and made the score much closer than it should have been. They scored nine runs in their final two at-bats, something the Falcons coaching staff will address moving forward.
In the end, the Falcons pounded 14 hits led by Embleton and his three knocks and three RBIs. Tucker, Loving, Graff-Rowe, Buckner and Rodgers all finished with two hits and Tucker and Loving each scored three times.
With the win the Falcons (14-10) will have Monday off before opening another home-and-home series with the Kamloops NorthPaws (10-14). Tuesday and Thursday the games will be played at Elks Stadium and on Canada Day the Falcons will play in Kamloops.
Tickets for the home games are available in advance on the Falcons ticket page or can be purchased at the gate an hour before the game starting at 5:30pm.
