Lefty vs Lefties
Friday night the Falcons welcome the Port Angeles Lefties to Elks Stadium for a three-game weekend series.
The Falcons (5-7) will be looking to rebound after dropping the last two games against the visiting Walla Walla Sweets, combining for just two runs scored. After an impressive 11-1 win on Tuesday, the offence has struggled the last two games and will look to turn things around against the Lefties (3-9) who are also struggling.
They have lost six straight games, and their pitching staff is finding it difficult to keep runs off the board. In their last three games they have coughed up 32 runs and during this six-game losing streak have been outscored 57-33. Over the course of their 12 games they have allowed 78 runs, fourth most in the West Coast League but oddly enough have struck out 114 batters, second most in the WCL. Their team ERA is 5.19. By comparison the Falcons team ERA is 3.94, second best in the league.
Offensively the teams are roughly even when comparing head-to-head. The Falcons have scored 62 runs, while the Lefties have 61 and the visitors have a better team batting average at .249 compared to a .230 Falcons average. Coming into tonight the Falcons have 26 extra base hits, including 10 homeruns compared to the Lefties 23 and four homers.
This series will come down to pitching and which staff can produce outs for the defence. The Falcons will hand the ball to Canadian Mark Rogers making his second start of the season. In his last outing the lefty was brilliant in Victoria recording the win after six innings of work, scattering five hits and striking out seven.
Tickets for any of the three weekend games against the Lefties are available in advance or fans can purchase them at the gate an hour before the game. Friday and Saturday will see the opening pitch at 6:35pm, with the series finale played on Sunday at 1:05pm before the team heads to Oregon.
