A New Hope
Two more pitchers have been added to the Falcons 2026 summer roster, and the coaching staff continue to add top tier talent in anticipation of the new West Coast League season opening in May.
Both righthanded pitchers are currently juniors at Hope International University in Fullerton, California and will be able to give the Falcons important innings on the bump.
Matt Wurmlinger (right) is a transfer from Cypress College where he spent two seasons making 28 appearances out of the bullpen striking out 26 hitters over the course of 27 innings. To date this spring he has appeared six times for Hope striking out seven hitters over 3.2 innings.
In the classroom he is a Business Administration major who is working towards owning his own business in the future. He does have some athletic bloodlines with his dad, Michael, playing college football at Ball State.
Righty Lucas Smith (left) is also a transfer following two seasons at Palomar College where he helped his team win two Conference titles including his sophomore season which saw him record a 2.80 ERA. So far this spring he has appeared six times out of the pen, striking out five in five innings of work.
Coming into the summer season with the Falcons, Wurmlinger and Smith will be hungry for innings and will continue to get those opportunities if they are successful. They will no doubt want to prove themselves early as they work on their craft before heading back to school for their season campaign.
The Falcons open the season at home on May 29th when the Bellingham Bells come to town and season tickets are available now, as are billet opportunities to create everlasting memories. Billeting can be a beneficial experience for both players and host families. For billet families, it means opening up their homes to aspiring baseball players, giving them an opportunity to share experiences within the billet family unit. For the player, it’s a chance to share different cultural and social experiences while developing their skills. To learn more, contact the Falcons billet coordinator Karen Nonis at 250-717-6870.
