Series Win
Under red hot temperatures in Kelowna on Sunday afternoon, the Falcons offence caught fire in the latter stages of the game and earned an 8-0 shutout in the series finale with the visiting Port Angeles Lefties.
Starting pitcher Max Biddle baffled the Lefties’ hitters in his best outing of the summer. He earned his first win of the campaign with an outstanding 6.2 innings, scattering five hits and striking our four. Jackson Bell and Keller Bloodworth continued to shutdown the visitors, holding the lead for Biddle.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when the Falcons finally broke through with what would turn out to be the game winning run. With one out, Talon Tucker doubled, then moved to third on a ground out. A runner at third must have rattled Lefties’ reliever Conner Weiss because on the very next pitch he uncorked a wild pitch to allow Tucker to score.
The Falcons offence added a pair in their next at bats. With one out in the inning Jacob Loving and Nolan Eberwein collected back-to-back singles placing runners at the corners. Rees Kozar then reached on an error to allow Loving to score. Two batters later CJ Griggs hammered an RBI double to easily score Eberwein.
In the eighth the home side blew the game wide open with five runs in the inning. With runners at the corners, Chris Tampoya’s ground out scored Xander Sielken who singled to lead things off. Loving then singled to drive home Druw Frost, then scored on an RBI double from Eberwein. After Kozar was hit by a pitch and a pitching change, Matthew Pena continued his blistering pace at the plate coming up with an RBI single to drive in Eberwein. The offence wasn’t done as two batters later Tucker’s ground out would score Pena from third to put an explanation point on the inning and the ballgame.
The offence pounded out 13 hits, led by Eberwein’s three hit performance. Loving, Kozar and Griggs contributed with a multi-hit game and seven different players drove in a run for a very balanced attack with timely hitting.
Following the series win the Falcons will enjoy a much-deserved break before making the almost 10-hour bus ride down to Bend, Oregon to meet the Elks for a three game weekend series beginning on Friday night. They will then turnaround and come right back to Kelowna to welcome the Kamloops NorthPaws to Elks Stadium on Tuesday June 24th.
