Pena & Sumner, oh my
A two-run homerun off the bat of Matthew Pena in the bottom of the first inning set the tone on Saturday night as the Falcons clobbered the visiting Port Angeles Lefties 7-1 to get back in the win column.
After Ashton Graff-Rowe singed to lead off the inning, Pena blasted his league leading fifth homer of the season and second in as many days. Three batters later with two-out Talon Tucker doubled then scored on an RBI single off the bat of Xander Sielken, his first RBI of the summer.
That would be all the scoring starting pitcher Seth Sumner would need. He was brilliant over seven innings of work. He held the Lefties to just one run and fanned four in his second win of the campaign.
The offence added another Falcons run in the home half of the third inning on an RBI ground out by CJ Griggs. Pena then added another RBI in the fourth, driving in Justin Tucker with an RBI single.
With the sun still shining in the sixth inning, the offence went back to work taking advantage of some sloppy play by the Lefties. Boogie McNeal reached on an error, then moved to second base on another error in the innings before getting to third. He then scored on a passed ball.
Following the seventh inning stretch the offence continued to swing the bat well. Talon Tucker reached on a four-pitch walk, then promptly stole second. A couple of pitches later he would score thanks to a Sielken double.
In all the offence recorded nine hits and held the Lefties to just four.
Sunday afternoon the Falcons (6-8) host the Lefties (4-10) in the series rubber match. The opening pitch is set for 1:05pm at Elks Stadium and tickets can be purchased in advance or at the gate an hour before opening pitch. Max Biddle is the scheduled starter for the Falcons.
